  1. Trouble Shooting
  2.  
  3. If nothing happens when the CD is inserted into the drive, autoplay can also 
  4. be started by double clicking on the CD icon found in 'My Computer'.  If 
  5. neither of these starts the installation, either begin installation manually or 
  6. enable autoplay on your CD ROM/DVD drive (instructions on how to do this 
  7. are found below).
  8.

  10. Manual Installation
  11. If your machine does not have autoplay enabled, the game can also be 
  12. installed by opening the 'My Computer' window and then double clicking on 
  13. the CD icon to open a window displaying the contents of the CD.  From this window 
  14. find the file named SETUP and double click it, this will start the installation 
  15. process.

  17.  
  18. Moving game files to a new folder or drive
  19. If you wish to move the games files to a different drive or folder, it is 
  20. recommended that you uninstall the game and reinstall it in the new 
  21. destination.  Simply copying files to a new destination can result in the game 
  22. failing to run.
  23.  
  24.  
  25. Reinstallation
  26. If you need to reinstall the game, either autorun the CD and select the 
  27. 'reinstall' option from the menu screen that appears or follow the instructions 
  28. above for a manual installation.
  29.  
  30.  
  31. Enabling Autoplay on your CD/DVD drive
  32. Autoplay can be enabled as follows
  33. Right click on the 'My Computer' icon and select 'Properties'.
  34.  
  35. From the 'System Properties' window that opens, click on the 'Device 
  36. Manager' tab
  37.  
  38. A list of components in your machine will appear, click the + sign next to the 
  39. CDROM label, highlight the drive that appears and select the 'Properties' icon 
  40. at the base of the Window.
  41.  
  42. From the Window that opens, click the 'Settings' tab.
  43.  
  44. On the 'Settings' screen there should be an Option named 'Auto insert 
  45. notification', ensure that there is a tick next to this.
  46.  
  47. Click 'OK' to exit the CD properties screen then close the 'System Properties' 
  48. window.  Your machine will probably say it needs to restart, once this is done 
  49. autoplay should be enabled on your machine.
  50.  
  51.  
  52. Installing DirectX 8
  53.  
  54. Warrior Kings requires that DirectX 8 is installed to allow certain functions to 
  55. operate.  The Warrior Kings installation program will automatically check to 
  56. see if you have this on your system.  If not it will automatically load it for you, 
  57. so nothing to worry about.
  58.  
  59. If you are experiencing problems with DirectX 8 then please refer to the 
  60. chapter on DirectX 8 issues.
  61.  
  62.  
  63. WINDOWS CONFIGURATION
  64.  
  65. When running Warrior Kings, it is recommended that you check the following 
  66. configuration settings of Windows;
  67.  
  68.  
  69. Colour Mode
  70. You will need to have windows set to a colour mode of True Colour (32bit) 
  71. colours or higher.  The colour mode can be changed as follows;
  72.  
  73. Click the right mouse button when on the desktop, and select the option 
  74. 'Properties' from the menu that appears.
  75.  
  76. A window titled 'Display Properties' will appear, click on the 'Settings' tab to 
  77. bring up the display settings screen.
  78.  
  79.  
  80. From this screen the colour mode ('Colours') and screen resolution ('Screen 
  81. area') can be altered.  
  82.  
  83.  
  84. Active Desktop
  85. If you have Microsoft's Active Desktop enabled, it is recommended that you 
  86. disable it before running Warrior Kings.
  87.  
  88.  
  89. Close Other Programs
  90. Before starting Warrior Kings, you are advised to close down all other 
  91. programs that may be running.  Doing this will ensure that Warrior Kings is 
  92. able to use the maximum system resources available.  
  93.  
  94. Windows Virtual Memory
  95. Virtual Memory is basically when Windows uses hard drive space as extra 
  96. memory.  It does this by creating a swap file on the hard drive and writing 
  97. data to it, the result is that software that may need more memory than the 
  98. machine it is being run on physically has will still run.
  99. Games software typically needs a fairly large amount of space for a swap file, 
  100. with around 100Mb typically recommended, or more.
  101.  
  102. The Virtual memory can be managed in two ways, automatically or manually.  
  103. To check which method is being used on your machine, follow these steps;
  104.  
  105. Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties' from the menu that 
  106. appears.
  107.  
  108. The 'System Properties' window will open, click on the 'Performance' tab and 
  109. then click on the 'Virtual Memory' icon.
  110.  
  111. A window titled 'Virtual Memory' will now be open.  
  112.  
  113. If the option "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings" is 
  114. highlighted then your virtual memory is being automatically managed by 
  115. windows.  If this is the case please ensure that your C: drive has enough free 
  116. hard drive space (100Mb or more).  This can be checked by double clicking on 
  117. the 'My Computer' icon, right clicking on the (C:) drive and selecting 
  118. 'Properties', the free space on the drive will be listed in the properties window 
  119. that opens.
  120. If the option "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings" is highlighted, 
  121. you are manually setting the limits of the swap file for Virtual memory.  If this 
  122. is the case we recommend that you ensure that the maximum amount listed is 
  123. not less than 100.

  126. Mouse Drivers
  127.  
  128. "If you have a LOGITECH mouse, DO NOT USE "web wheel", and ensure that 
  129. you have assigned the wheel to "MS standard scrolling" and "scroll in active 
  130. window only" and the centre wheel button to "middle mouse button" and NOT 
  131. TO ANY OTHER ASSIGNMENT."

  134. VIDEO CARDS
  135.  
  136. Video Card Requirements
  137. Warrior Kings requires a video card with at least 16Mb of memory that can 
  138. display 16bit colour.  The primary video card in your machine MUST have at 
  139. least 16Mb of memory for Warrior Kings to run, the memory of any additional 
  140. accelerator cards will not be taken into account.   If your video card has 
  141. insufficient memory the game will not run correctly, or at all.   In the finished 
  142. product an explicit message will be displayed.

  145. Direct X
  146. In order to run, the video card must be compatible with Direct X (and must 
  147. also typically be using certified drivers).  Possible symptoms of your card not 
  148. being DirectX compatible include the machine displaying a black screen when 
  149. you start the game, the graphics of the game being corrupted or the colour 
  150. within the game being incorrect.
  151.

  153. Monitor Settings 
  154. If you experience video problems, it is also possible that the cause could be 
  155. that your monitor is not configured within Windows.  This can be checked as 
  156. follows;
  157.  
  158. Click the right mouse button on the desktop and select 'Properties' from the 
  159. menu that appears.
  160.  
  161. On the 'Display Properties' window that appears, click on the 'Settings' tab.  
  162. Click on the 'Advanced' icon (users with the original version of Windows will 
  163. have to click on the  'Change Display Type' icon at this point).
  164.  
  165. Click on the 'monitor' tab in the new window.  If your monitor is not the one 
  166. currently named, click on the 'Change' icon (users of the original version of 
  167. Windows  will need to click on the 'Change' icon next to 'Monitor Type').  If 
  168. you received a driver disk with your monitor, use that.  If not, you will need to 
  169. manually configure your monitor.
  170.  
  171. Under Windows  you can select your monitor from the list displayed (Click on 
  172. 'Show all Devices' to get a complete list if your monitor is not named under 
  173. 'Show Compatible Devices').  Under Windows 98 you will need to select the 
  174. option to 'Display a list of all drivers in a specific location', and once again 
  175. select 'Show all Hardware' if your monitor is not listed under the 'Show 
  176. Compatible Hardware' option.
  177.  
  178. Multi-Monitor Systems
  179.  
  180. If you have a computer with more than one graphics accelerator card that is 
  181. DirectX 8 compatible, then Warrior Kings may not select the accelerator card 
  182. that you want when it starts up. You can specify the card that Warrior Kings 
  183. uses by changing some if its system settings in the registry. WARNING, we 
  184. only recommend that advanced users attempt this.
  185.  
  186. Warrior Kings saves its persistent graphical settings in the following place in 
  187. the system registry:
  188. 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Black Cactus/Warrior 
  189. Kings/Renderer'
  190.  
  191. You can browse and edit the registry with the 'regedit' program, which is part 
  192. of the default Windows installation.
  193.  
  194. You need to set the 'save_enumerations_to_file' key to 1. This will make 
  195. Warrior Kings save a file called 'enumerations.txt' into its working directory 
  196. when the game exits. This file contains a list of all available accelerator 
  197. devices that Warrior Kings can use.
  198.  
  199. An example of the contents of this file on a multi-monitor system is:
  200.  
  201. Device('nv4_disp.dll'): 'NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400'
  202.     Driver: 'HAL'

  207. Now, you can tell the game to attempt to use one of these cards by editing 
  208. the 'prefered_device' and 'prefered_driver' keys in the registry. To use 
  209. the 'GeForce3 Ti' card in the above sample:
  210. set 'prefered_device' to        NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 500
  211. set 'prefered_driver' to        HAL

  214. Drivers

  216. If any graphical problems are encountered, we recommend that you try using 
  217. the latest video card drivers from the manufacturer of your video card or its 
  218. chipset.  The Internet addresses of some of the main video card and chipset 
  219. manufacturers are listed below, if yours is not covered please check your cards 
  220. documentation for a link.

  247. SOUND CARDS

  249. Sound Card Requirements
  250. Your machine MUST have a sound card in order to load.  If your machine does 
  251. not have a sound card the game will fail to load.   You will need to have a 
  252. Direct X compatible sound card (it will also typically need to be using certified 
  253. drivers).  
  254.  
  255. Possible symptoms of your card not being DirectX compatible include 
  256. receiving no sound whilst playing, sound effects playing but stuttering or 
  257. static playing rather than sound and music.  See Section 3 for details on how 
  258. to check your sound cards compatibility.
  259.  
  260.  
  261. Volume Settings
  262. If all the drivers for the sound card are OK but you are still receiving no sound, 
  263. check the volume controls within Windows are set correctly.  To do this;
  264.   
  265. In the bottom right of the desktop, next to the clock, should be a speaker icon.  
  266. Right click on this and select 'Open Volume Controls' from the menu that 
  267. appears.
  268.   
  269. A window titled 'Volume Control' should open, ensure that all the volume 
  270. meters are set correctly and that none of the boxes labelled 'Mute' are ticked.

  272.  
  273. Checking Sound Playback 
  274. To check that the sound is working correctly within Windows
  275. Open 'My Computer' by double clicking on its icon and then double click on 
  276. the Control Panel icon on the window that appears.
  277.  
  278. From the Control Panel, double click on the 'Sounds' icon.
  279.  
  280. Highlight one of the options (eg. 'Asterisk') and ensure there is a speaker icon 
  281. next to its name.  If there is not click 'browse' and select a file, the folder
  282.  C:\Windows\Media will normally contain some.
  283.  
  284. Click on the play button next to  'Preview:'. A sound sample should now load 
  285. and play, if you do not hear anything then your sound card may not be set up 
  286. correctly within Windows.
  287.  
  288.  
  289. Specific Sound Card Problems
  290.  
  291. If your sound card is not Direct X certified you may encounter audio 
  292. corruption.  To check whether your sound card is certified, see section 3 
  293. (Checking Certification).  Obtaining DirectX compatible drivers from your 
  294. hardware manufacturer can solve the problem.

  299. If any problems are encountered, we recommend that you try using the latest 
  300. audio drivers from the manufacturer of your sound card.  The Internet 
  301. addresses of some of the main sound card manufacturers are listed below, if 
  302. yours is not covered please check your cards documentation for a link.

  315. Systems with multiple CD drives
  316. If you are running the game on a system that has more than one CD or DVD 
  317. drive (due to either multiple drives or having one drive with multiple trays) we 
  318. recommend that the Warrior Kings CD is always placed in the first drive (ie. 
  319. on a system with E:, F: and G: drives, place the CD in E:).
  320.  
  321.  
  322. Windows drivers
  323. In order to install Warrior Kings your CD/DVD will need to be using Windows 
  324. based drivers.  If it is running using MS-DOS based drivers you will be unable 
  325. to install the game (an error titled 'SEVERE, Unable to install Direct X Media' 
  326. is the typical symptom).  In this case, please install Windows drivers for your 
  327. CD/DVD drive.
  328.

  330. To check which drivers you are using
  331. Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties' from the menu that 
  332. appears.
  333.  
  334. From the 'System Properties' menu that appears click on the 'Performance' 
  335. tab.
  336.  
  337. Under the heading 'Performance Status', File System should be listed as 32-bit 
  338. whilst at the bottom of the box it should say "Your system is configured for 
  339. optimal performance'.  If this is not the case you may need to obtain Windows 
  340. based drivers for your CD/DVD drive from its manufacturer.   
  341.  
  342.  
  343. CD Errors
  344. If you receive a Blue Windows error screen saying there was an error reading 
  345. the CD whilst installing or playing the game, it could be the result of one of the 
  346. following.
  347.  
  348. Removing the CD whilst a game is in progress.
  349.  
  350. A CD that is scratched or dirty.  This can be checked by examining the CD for 
  351. scratches, fingerprints etc..  If any are found the CD may need cleaning, this 
  352. can be done with either a commercially available CD cleaner or by wiping the 
  353. CD with a soft dry cloth (always ensure that you wipe the CD in a straight line 
  354. from the centre to the outer edge).  
  355.  
  356. There may be a problem with your CD/DVD ROM drive.  Ensure that you are 
  357. using the Windows based drivers.  If you are experiencing similar problems 
  358. with other disk intensive software it could be that the drive itself is not 
  359. working properly.

  362. UNINSTALLATION
  363.  
  364. The game should always be removed either from the uninstall option on the 
  365. START menu or from the add/remove menu (details on how to do this are 
  366. below).  It should not be manually deleted from the hard drive, as this will 
  367. result in data being left in the Windows registry.
  368.  
  369.  
  370. Uninstalling Game via START menu
  371. To remove Warrior Kings via the START menu, open the START menu, then 
  372. open the Programs / Warrior Kings folder.  From here select the option 
  373. 'Uninstall Warrior Kings' to remove the game from your machine.
  374.

  376. Uninstalling game via Add/Remove Programs
  377. To remove the game using the Add/remove Programs function of Windows
  378. Double click on 'My Computer' and then double click on the 'Control Panel' 
  379. icon in the window that opens.
  380.  
  381. Double click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon.
  382.  
  383.  
  384. Highlight the Warrior Kings line on the  'Add/Remove Programs Properties' 
  385. window and click on the 'Add/Remove' icon.
  386.  
  387.  
  388. Problems Uninstalling Game
  389. If any problems are encountered during the uninstallation of the game that 
  390. result in it being impossible to remove it, we recommend that you try 
  391. reinstalling Warrior Kings. Once this has been done it should be possible to 
  392. uninstall it without any problems.

  394.  
  395. Files Left Behind
  396. When Warrior Kings is uninstalled, you may find that some files are left 
  397. behind.  These files consist of options settings and save games.  If you do not 
  398. wish to keep these files you will need to manually delete them from your 
  399. system. 
  400.  
  401. OPTIMIZING GAME SPEED
  402.  
  403. There are a number of ways in which machines can be optimised to improve 
  404. the speed of games.
  405.  
  406. Ensure No Other Software is Running
  407. For details on how to check which other programs are running on your 
  408. machine.
  409.  
  410. Disable virus checking software while running WK.
  411.  
  412.  
  413. Virtual Memory
  414. Ensure that there is enough free hard drive space for Virtual Memory.
  415.  
  416. The performance of a machine can also be improved by manually setting up a 
  417. permanent swap file on a separate physical drive (this should only be 
  418. attempted by advanced users).
  419.  
  420. Screen Savers/Desktop Themes
  421. Disabling any third party Screen Savers or Desktop Themes may have an effect 
  422. on improving system performance.
  423.  
  424. Hard Drive Maintenance
  425. Ensure that your hard drive is working efficiently.  This can be done using 
  426. Scandisk (to check for damaged or corruption of the hard drive) and Defrag 
  427. (to defragment the hard drive and possibly reduce load times).  To access 
  428. these utilities;
  429.  
  430. Double click on 'My Computer'
  431.  
  432. Right click on the hard drive you wish to check and select 'properties' from the 
  433. menu that appears.
  434.  
  435. When the drive properties window opens, click on the 'Tools' tab.
  436.  
  437. To run Scandisk, click on the 'Check Now' icon under the heading 'Error 
  438. Checking Status'.  To run Defrag, click on the 'Defragment Now' icon under 
  439. the heading 'Defragmentation Status'.
  440.  
  441.  
  442. TROUBLESHOOTING
  443.  
  444. If a problem does occur, we recommend that you exit the game and restart 
  445. Windows before attempting to run .   again.  If you are having trouble exiting 
  446. the game, it can be done manually as follows
  447. Press the CONTROL, ALT and DELETE keys together.
  448.  
  449. From the 'Close Program' menu that appears highlight the name Warrior 
  450. Kings.
  451.  
  452. Click on the 'End Task' icon.
  453.  
  454.  
  455. General Solutions
  456. If you are having problems running Warrior Kings, there are a number of 
  457. things that you can initially try
  458.  
  459. Manually Install DirectX 
  460. DirectX may need to be reinstalled, see section (3) for details on how to do 
  461. this.
  462.  
  463. Reinstall Game
  464. Sometimes problems may have occurred during the installation of the game.  
  465. Simply uninstalling Warrior Kings and then installing it once more can fix 
  466. these problems.
  467.  
  468. Close Other Programs
  469. Ensure that Warrior Kings is the only thing running.
  470.  
  471. Check that Direct X Drivers are Certified
  472. See the relevant section for details on how to check that your video and sound 
  473. card drivers are certified by Direct X.  If they are not you may need to obtain 
  474. the latest drivers from your cards manufacturer.
  475.  
  476.  
  477. Potential issues with DirectX 8
  478.  
  479. Installing DirectX may result in any manufacturers video card utilities being 
  480. disabled.  These utilities will no longer be accessible, and any options to 
  481. change video settings etc. will revert back to the control of Windows (to access 
  482. the display properties, right click the mouse over the Windows desktop and 
  483. select 'Properties', from the Window that then opens select the 'Settings' tab to 
  484. enter the 'Display Properties' screen). 
  485.  
  486.  
  487. If after installing DirectX 8, you restart your machine and encounter problems 
  488. (eg. a black screen is displayed rather than the Windows desktop) you may 
  489. need to restore your old video card drivers.  In order to see the Windows 
  490. desktop to do this, start your machine in 'Safe Mode'.  This can be done as 
  491. follows
  492. Start your machine, and when the BIOS screen appears (a screen listing CPU 
  493. type etc. in a table) press the F8 key.  Your should now be met with the 
  494. Windows Startup Menu.
  495. Select the Safe Mode option from this menu using the cursor keys and then 
  496. press RETURN.
  497. Windows will start and you will be met with a message telling you that 
  498. Windows is running in 'Safe Mode'.  Press RETURN to continue loading 
  499. Windows.
  500. Once Windows finished loading, press the right mouse button and select 
  501. 'Properties' from the menu that appears.
  502. From the 'Display Properties' menu, choose the 'Settings' tab and then click on 
  503. 'Advanced' (if you are using the original version of Windows, this will be 
  504. named 'Change Display type').
  505. From the new window that opens click on the 'Adapter' tab, then click on the 
  506. 'Changeà' icon (if using the original version of Windows, click on the 'Change' 
  507. icon next to 'Adapter Type').
  508. The installation process for adding video drivers will now begin, use the 
  509. drivers originally supplied for your video card, and follow the manufacturers 
  510. instructions.

  513. Changing Hardware
  514. If you change any of the hardware within your machine, you will need to 
  515. reinstall DirectX again.  This is to ensure that the new hardware is Direct X 
  516. certified, as the drivers supplied with the hardware may not be.
  517.  
  518.  
  519. Checking Certification
  520. In order to ensure that Warrior Kings works correctly on your machine, you 
  521. will need to have your video and display drivers certified by Direct X (for 
  522. details of what certification means see the section 'Certification' below).  If you 
  523. encounter any problems running the game, the first thing to check is that your 
  524. video and sound cards are certified, this can be done as follows
  525.  
  526. Open the Start menu by clicking on the START icon at the bottom left of the 
  527. screen, from here click on the 'Run' option. 
  528.  
  529. A window titled 'Run' will open, in the box labelled 'Open:' type in the 
  530. following;
  531.  
  532. C:\PROGRAM FILES\DIRECTX\SETUP\DXDIAG.EXE
  533.  
  534. A window titled 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool' should now be open.  If this window 
  535. does not open, you may not have DirectX6 installed, see above for details on 
  536. how to install it from the CD.  If the window does appear there are a number 
  537. of things that can be checked.
  538.  
  539.  
  540. Video Driver Certification
  541. Click on the 'Display' or 'Display 1' tab at the top of the 'DirectX Diagnostic 
  542. Tool' window.
  543. From the screen that appears, you can find out the name of your video card, 
  544. the amount of memory it has and you can also test its 2D (DirectDraw) and 3D 
  545. (Direct3D) features.  To check certification, under the heading 'Drivers' the 
  546. 'Certified :' heading should be accompanied by Yes.  Also, under the 'Notes' 
  547. heading the first line should say 'No driver problems found'.  If this is not the 
  548. case on your system, then you may need to obtain new video card drivers from 
  549. your manufacturer.  A list of Internet sites where drivers can be found is listed 
  550. below under 'Video Cards'.

  552. Sound Driver Certification
  553. Click on the 'Sound' tab at the top of the 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool' window.  
  554. On the screen that appears, under the heading 'Driver' it will say whether it is 
  555. certified (Yes or No) whilst under the heading 'Notes' the first line should read 
  556. 'No driver problems found'.  If this is not the case on your system then you will 
  557. need to obtain new sound card drivers from your manufacturer.  A list of 
  558. Internet sites where drivers can be found is listed below under 'Sound Cards'.

  560. Certification
  561. If a driver is 'certified' by DirectX, it means that it has been tested by 
  562. Microsoft for full compatibility with the latest version of DirectX.  Uncertified 
  563. drivers have not been tested by Microsoft, and although they may still run 
  564. DirectX games, it is not guaranteed.  In order to guarantee full compatibility 
  565. with current software, every driver should be certified (this typically applies to 
  566. sound and video card drivers).

  569. Direct Media
  570. Direct Media is required to view the games introduction.  If you are not seeing 
  571. the rendered introduction upon starting the game you may not have Direct
